「地下室の会」の歴史

富倉安生さんと飲もう！
ということで友人の佐藤研二、スティング宮本を誘い三軒茶屋の飲み屋で顔を合わせたのが1997年11月のことだった。
ベーシスト同士、顔や名前を知ってはいても仕事場で顔を合わすことはまずありえない。
その夜はベースについてとことん語りあった。
といってもそれぞれが普段思っていること、感じていることをただ口にするだけである。
ベース、アンプ、エフェクター、弦などの楽器の話はもとより好きなベーシスト、果ては真空管の話まで、、話は尽きなかった。
とにかくおもしろいのだ。


ある種の心地よいショックを受けた我々は「またやりたいね。」
「他のベーシストも誘ってみよう。」ということになった。
せっかくだから「ベーシストの会」みたいのを作っちゃおうよ・・
２度目の飲み会を約束した。
そして、その時までに会の名前を考えてくるということになった。


明けて1998年2月。僕は鈴木正人、国司環を誘い、富倉さんは恵美直也、川野美紀に声をかけ、９人での飲み会となった。
その場で名簿を作った。
何人ぐらい集まるかなあということで番号を付けることになった。
番号はお店に来た順に付けていった。


場所は前回と同じ"地下"の店である。
地下室を表す[BASEMENT]とベースの[BASS]とを掛けて
「地下室の会」・[BASSMENT-PARTY]と命名した。


第３回目の飲み会には渡辺敦子、川添智久らが参加した。
３〜４ヶ月に一度というペースで会を重ねるうちに閃いた。
「この会でライブをやったらどうだろう！！」
それぞれがやっているバンドでもいいし、セッションバンドでもいい。
とにかくベーシストが中心のライブだ。


2000年3月26日、記念すべき第１回目のライブが行なわれた。
僕はBARAKA、スティング宮本はAZMAで、川添智久はBACKYARD SPECIALで出演。
富倉さんは鈴木茂さん（G）和田アキラさん（G）エルトン永田さん（Key）小柳"チェリー"昌法さん（Drs）らとスーパーセッションバンドで参加してくれた。
前回からはセットチェンジの間にベース２本での演奏も始めた。
サブステージを使っての生音でのセッションである。


下北沢CLUB251の協力を得て現在までに16回のライブを行なっている。
のべ百数十人のミュージシャンが出演してくれた。
次回は2003年8月28日である。


飲み会、ライブに一度でも顔を出した人がメンバーとなっていった。
条件は「プロのベーシストであること」のみである。


第一世代の富倉さん、高水健司さん、岡沢章さんから20代前半のメンバーまで、ベーシストだから成り立つのかもしれないこの集まりは8月30日の飲み会の時点で42名となった。数に制限はない。
これからどんなベーシストが参加してくれるのか楽しみでならない。
他にも素晴らしいベーシストがたくさんいる。
また、アマチュアのベーシストの目標になっていけばいいなとも思っている。


この会は当然ながら営利などは一切目的としていない。
自分たちの楽しみのために始めたことだ。
時間がある時に参加する。気がむいたら顔を出す。
このスタンスで行く。
しかし、これだけのメンバーが集まっているのだ。
何等かの形でもっと大きなことができるかもしれない。
このようなホームページもできた。
これからもすべて我々ベーシストの手でやっていきたい。
ベースの楽しさ、音楽の素晴らしさを自ら体現し、
一人でも多くの音楽ファンに触れてもらえたらと思う。

"Bassment Party History"

     "Let's go out for drinks with Yasuo Tomikura!"
     With those words I invited my friends Kenji Sato and Sting Miyamoto to a bar in Sangenjaya back in November '97. As fellow bassists, we were all acquaintances, but our paths had never crossed professionally.
     That night, we spoke endlessly about the bass, sharing our thoughts and feelings. Topics ranged from the bass itself to amps, effecters, strings, our favorite bassists, and even about tube amps. In short, we had a blast.

     This pleasant surprise urged us to meet again, next time inviting some other bassists. While we're at it, why don't we also make something like a "Bassists' Society"? we thought, and also promised to come up with a name for it.

     February '98. Nine of us came together: My guests were Masato Suzuki and Tamaki Kunishi, and Mr. Tomikura invited Naoya Emi and Miki Kawano. We created a directory on the spot, numbering the entries according to the order in which we arrived at the bar.

     The location, like the first time, took place in an underground, basement-like bar. Punning this on our beloved instrument, we decided to call our new group the "Bassment Party."

     Atsuko Watanabe and Tomohisa Kawazoe joined us for the third gathering. As we continued to met every three to four months, we became excited by the idea of doing a gig together --whether it be with our respective bands, or as a jam session with each other. Either was ok, as long as we bassists were the centerpiece.

     The first gig took place on March 26, 2000. I participated with BARAKA, Sting Miyamoto with AZMA, and Tomohisa Kawazoe with BACKYARD SPECIAL. Mr. Tomikura joined us for a jam session with Shigeru Suzuki (Guitar), Akira Wada (Guitar), Elton Nagata (Keys), and Masanori "Cherry" Koyanagi (Drums). Since the last time we've also added a two-bass live session during the intermissions.

     With the cooperation of CLUB251 in Shimokitazawa, we've so far had 16 gigs with well over 150 participating musicians. The next one is taking place on August 28th, 2003.

     Membership steadily increased as those who came through for drinks or jammed in our gigs joined our "Party". The only requirement for membership is that one be a professional bassist.

     From first-generation bassists like Yasuo Tomikura, Kenji Takamizu, and Akira Okazawa to fledgling twenty-something musicians, the "Bassment Party" comprises 81 members as of May 16th, 2003. There is no limit to our membership. I can hardly contain my excitement about the incredible bassists that have yet to join us! I also hope our "Party," as role models, will encourage upcoming bassists.

     As a group that began for our own enjoyment, we naturally don't have a for-profit agenda. We participate when we have the chance, and drop by when we're in the mood. That's the way we like it. Nonetheless, this many people have come together, hinting at the possibility of something big. We also have our own website now. We'll continue expressing the joys of bass-guitar playing and the beauty of music, and only hope that we can share our excitement with as many music fans as possible.
